Hot take: a guy at the Heroes Con panel in Charlotte ruined variant covers for me
I was at a panel at Heroes Con in Charlotte about 8 months ago, mostly to kill time between signings, and this guy in the back row asked the artist why he keeps doing variant covers. The artist got quiet for a second and said something like, "Honestly, most of them get bought by 3 people and never get read." Then he said his own mom has a stack of his variants still in bags. The whole room laughed but it stuck with me. I went home and counted my pull list, 14 of my 22 monthly books had a variant I grabbed just because it looked cool. I stopped preordering variants cold after that, and I have saved around $60 a month since, which I now put toward trades of stuff I actually read. Does anyone here still chase ratio variants, or did something make you slow down too?
