Dropped $85 on a graded comic at a Dallas show and finally learned to check the case before paying
Was at the Dallas Comic Show two weekends ago and found a mid grade X-Men issue I had been hunting for months, so I paid the guy $85 cash without really looking it over. Got home and noticed a hairline crack running across the top corner of the slab, and when I checked the grader notes online the book had a stain that was not mentioned on the seller's little tag. I know I should have asked to hold it up to the light first, but I got excited and handed over the money. Now the seller's booth number is gone and I am stuck with a cracked case and a book worth maybe $40. Has anyone had luck getting a cracked slab reholdered without the grading company charging an arm and a leg?
That line about handing over the money before you really looked at it hits home. I did the exact same thing at a show last year, got caught up in the moment and paid without checking, and the slab had a crack I never saw until I got to my car. Sorry you're stuck with this, it stings knowing the book is worth half what you paid. For the reholder, most of the big graders do have a cheap option where they just swap the case and don't regrade the book, so it's way less than a full submission. Check the grading company's site for that, you usually mail it in and it comes back in a few weeks. Not sure it's worth it on a $40 book though, so run the numbers before you spend more on it.
