My grinder died mid pour over at 6am in my kitchen in Boise and I almost threw the whole setup out the window
Last Tuesday I was halfway through a Chemex brew when my $60 hand grinder just locked up on a light roast Ethiopian I bought from the shop on 8th Street. I panicked and tried to force the crank, which stripped the burr threads completely, so now I had a full kettle of water at 205 and 22 grams of whole beans staring back at me. I grabbed a rolling pin, dumped the beans in a ziplock, and smashed them on the counter like a caveman, then brewed anyway out of pure spite. It tasted muddy and uneven but I drank every drop because I refused to admit defeat at 6am. Anyone got a hand grinder that actually survives light roasts or am I just too rough on these things?
Broke my cheap Hario on a washed Kenyan the same way, stripped the threads trying to force it. Switched to a 1Zpresso Q2 and started backing the burr off a click or two for light roasts, and it's been fine for two years now.
