That one Quake modder who taught me how to edit textures in paint.net back in 2008
I was stuck on a custom map for Quake 1, some texture was just not lining up right. A guy named 'rustbucket' on the old func_msgboard spent nearly 45 minutes walking me through aligning it in paint.net step by step over AIM. He didn't even know me, just saw my post and decided to help. Still think about that kindness sometimes, anyone else got a random modder who took time to teach them something?

Yeah, that's a good story, but I gotta correct one thing. It was 2008, but paint.net didn't have the layer blending modes for texture alignment until version 3.5 came out in early 2009. I remember because I was the one who helped a guy on the QuakeOne forums with a similar problem, and I had to walk him through using the clone stamp tool instead since the alignment feature wasn't there yet. So if 'rustbucket' was showing you how to use paint.net for Quake textures back then, he was probably teaching you the old school way of cutting and pasting sections by hand. What map was it, anyway?

Wait, are you saying the clone stamp tool was the go-to before the blending modes even existed? That must have been a nightmare for seamless textures. @johns18 I totally forgot about that old school cutting and pasting method - I remember doing that for a Quake 2 map I was messing with called "The Depths" where I had to hand-match edges because the lighting was so uneven. So if rustbucket was walking people through that process in 2008, he was probably a real vet who knew every trick to fake alignment until the update dropped. Did you ever figure out if he was the same guy who posted those tute series on Func_Msgboard?

Yeah, rustbucket was definitely on Func_Msgboard around 08. Same dry sense of humor in the tutorials.
