Talked to an old Doom modder at a meetup last Saturday
I went to a retro gaming meetup in Portland last weekend. A guy named Mark was there, he used to make levels for the original Doom back in the mid 90s. He told me something that stuck with me. He said the real secret to a good Doom mod isn't the fancy textures or new monsters, it's the flow of the map itself. He talked about how he'd draw every room on graph paper first, showing where monsters would come from and how players would move through the space. I've been making Doom mods for about 3 years now and I always just opened the editor and started building rooms. His comment made me rethink my whole approach. Has anyone else tried mapping out levels on paper before touching the editor?

Happens with everything creative though, not just game mods. My buddy builds furniture and he swears by sketching every single joint before he touches a saw, says it saves him hours of rework later. Sounds like that graph paper approach is the same kind of planning that keeps the final product feeling solid and intentional.
