Wire brush on a drill vs hand brushing creosote after a 40 year old flue kicked my butt
Had a job in Albany last month where the glaze layer was so hard my hand brush just skated over it for 20 minutes. I threw a stiff wire brush on my cordless drill at low speed and it chewed through the worst of it in maybe 4 minutes, but an old timer I know swears that spins grit into the mortar joints and you should only go by hand with a chemical softener first. I get the logic on both sides, but the drill cut my time on that flue in half. Which side are you on, and has anyone actually seen joint damage from a drill brush or is that just a rumor passed around?
