TIL the cap on a sweep log tells you more than the brush marks
I was cleaning a flue off a 1940s house in Dayton last Thursday and the cap had a quarter inch of baked on creosote that flaked off in sheets. My old mentor always said to check the cap before you even run a rod, and now I get why, because that glaze was stage three and the homeowner had no clue. I took a photo and showed him the difference between the dusty soot lower down and the shiny black crust up top, and he booked a sweep every six months from now on. Anyone else see caps that tell a different story than the firebox does?
