Covered a fireplace wrong for 5 years until a creosote explosion scared me
I had this one fireplace I swept regular for a home in Portland, always got a ton of creosote buildup but figured that was just typical use. Last spring I finally watched the homeowner light a fire and saw they were covering the top of the insert with a piece of steel after burning, trapping all that moisture and soot. Anyone else had a customer doing something simple that made your job way harder without you noticing till way later?

Good grief. That's one of those things where you just assume people know better. Five years is a long time to miss something so simple.
