Hot take: my walk-in cooler quit at 4:40pm on a Friday and the fix was a $9 part
We were mid service at the spot I run in Sacramento when the cooler started creeping up past 45 degrees. I lost about $180 of salmon and cream before I caught it. Turned out the condenser fan motor was shot, but the real kicker was a $9 start relay that had cooked itself and was making the compressor short cycle. I ran to the parts house on Fulton, swapped it in 20 minutes, and we were back to 38 by 7pm. Now I keep a spare relay and a cheap clamp meter in the office, since that meter told me way more than my guess did. What spare parts do you all keep around for your reach-ins?
Check whether that start relay is the same spec as the OEM one or a generic match, since a cheap relay with the wrong pickup voltage can cook itself the same way. How often are you pulling the grille and blowing out the condenser coils? A dirty coil makes the compressor and fan work harder and that's usually what kills the relay and motor in the first place.
