That old timer at the supply house made me rethink my seam rolling technique

Went to pick up some tack strip yesterday and this guy in his 70s who's been doing carpet since the 70s saw me grab a standard roller. He said "son, you're pressing the life out of the backing with that thing." Showed me his old wooden roller with a wider face. Tried it on a remnant in his truck and the seam practically disappeared. Been using the wrong tool for 12 years and never knew. Anyone else had a seasoned installer pull you aside with a tip that made you feel like a rookie?

Pressing the life out of the backing" - man, that hits close to home.

My buddy spent six months building a custom guitar and the first time he strummed it, the whole top cracked right down the middle. Do you think it's worth trying to repair something like that or just start over?
