Knee kicker gauge read wrong on a 60 foot hallway in Austin

Used a laser to double-check my knee kicker after a weird ripple showed up near the door. Turns out the gauge was off by almost half an inch and I had to pull up 40 feet of glued carpet. Anyone else trust their kicker too much and skip the measure?
