That $250 drill bit set I bought on a whim ended up saving me 4 hours on one job
I was at Home Depot last month grabbing some deck screws and saw this fancy set of auger bits on sale. I almost walked past but grabbed it anyway, figured I could return it if it was junk. First time I used it to drill through some thick treated lumber for a fence post, it went through like butter. My old bits would have bound up after the second hole and I'd be fighting them the rest of the day. Has anyone else dropped cash on a tool they didn't think they needed and had it pay off quick?

Man, I gotta be the contrarian here (surprise surprise). I bought a fancy "self feeding" auger bit set once and it literally snapped in half on the third hole through some regular pine. That $250 could've bought me a solid corded drill and a box of cheap bits that would've lasted years. Feels like a lot of these premium sets are just marketing hype for weekend warriors who drill one hole a month.

My husband did something similar with a torque wrench he bought on clearance, and it sat in the garage for six months before we needed it (he kept saying I told you so the whole time I was putting it together). But honestly, sometimes you get lucky with the expensive stuff and other times you end up with a drawer full of overpriced junk you're too stubborn to return. That auger bit set sounds like a winner though, which is rare for impulse buys at that price point.
