TIL putting your salary expectations first in an interview can backfire hard

I was in a Zoom interview last Tuesday for a project coordinator role in Denver. The recruiter asked what I wanted to make, so I threw out $55k without thinking. Turns out the budget was $70k, but since I said a number first, they locked me into the lower range. My buddy who works there told me after I didn't get the job that I should have said "what's the range for this role" instead. Has anyone else gotten burned by naming a number too early in a negotiation?

Seems like a lot of fuss over one number. Is 15k really worth that much drama?

Honestly, "a lot of fuss" is a bit of an understatement, don't you think? Tbh, that 15k is the difference between a person getting a life-changing surgery or not, it's insane. Ngl, I've seen people on here lose their minds over way less money than that, so the drama makes total sense to me. It's not just a number when it's about someone's health or their pet's life, you know?
