Rant: I called zip ties a hack job for 15 years, then I saw the back of my friend's server rack
Back in 2008 I worked at a small computer shop in Dayton and we used nothing but velcro and those little adhesive clips, because zip ties were for people who didn't care about cutting cables when they needed to move something. I held onto that for years, even when I started doing home theater installs on the side. Six months ago my buddy Kevin, who runs a two person IT shop out of his garage, showed me the back of his rack. Every cable was zip tied, but he used the ones with the little tab you can release by hand, and he had them spaced about every 4 inches, all cinched just snug enough to hold shape, not crush the jacket. He said he had been running that setup for 3 years and never broke a single clip or cut a tie to swap a drive. I tried it on my own rack with a $9 bag of releasable ties from the hardware store on Smithville Road and I have not gone back to velcro since, mostly because the ties hold the bundle tighter without sagging over time. Has anyone else switched sides on zip ties, or am I just late to something everyone figured out already?
