Dropped $85 on a cable management kit that made my desk look worse, now I'm wondering if I'm the only one who got played

So last month I finally got fed up with the rats nest behind my desk and bought one of those all in one cable management kits. You know the ones, comes with clips, sleeves, ties, a little tray, the whole thing. $85 at Best Buy in Portland. I spent a whole Saturday running every wire through those sleeves, and by the time I was done it looked like my desk was wrapped in a giant black snake. Here is the thing though, half the clips would not stick to the underside of my IKEA desk, and the sleeve made every cable impossible to unplug when I needed to move my laptop. My brother says I just did it wrong and I should have bought the $15 velcro straps instead. But my coworker swears by the kits and says they work great if you plan it out first. So which is it, are these kits a scam or do they actually work if you have more patience than me? I am out $85 and honestly thinking about just letting the cables hang free again.
