Dropped $340 on a used welder off marketplace and it taught me more than my $1,200 one ever did
So about two years back I finally saved up and bought a brand new multi process welder for around $1,200 because I figured new meant reliable. Used it maybe ten times, ran perfect beads, and I never really learned anything because it just worked. Then last spring my buddy asked if I wanted his old stick welder for $340, thing was beat to hell with a cracked lead and a fan that sounded like a lawnmower. I bought it anyway and the first thing I did was try to run a bead on some 1/4 inch scrap and it looked like chewed gum. Turns out the polarity was flipped and the amps were way off, so I spent a full Saturday in my garage in Tucson figuring out why. I must have burned through 15 rods just messing with settings and reading the puddle, and by the end I could actually feel when the arc was right instead of just watching the machine do it. The cheap old thing forced me to pay attention, and now when I go back to the nice one my beads are way better. Anyone else got a cheap tool that made you a better builder than the expensive one did?
