The hostel front desk guy swore by a $2 eye mask trick, he was right
Stayed at a place in Lisbon for 6 nights and the curtains were basically see through. Sun hit the room at 6am and woke me up every day until I asked the front desk guy for advice. He handed me a cheap sleep mask from a basket and said it worked better than any blackout curtain he'd seen. He was absolutely right. For $2 it fixed the whole trip, I got solid sleep and saved the extra $15 a night for a darker room. Anyone else found a random cheap fix that beat paying for the upgrade?
My sister-in-law swears by the same trick for airplane travel. She bought a three pack of cheap masks at a dollar store years ago and now refuses to fly without one. But here's the funny part, the hotel in Lisbon thing reminded me of when we stayed in a place in Rome that had a neon sign right outside the window. We asked for a room change and they said no, sold out. So my husband hung his jacket over the curtain rod with a couple of binder clips from his work bag. Blocked out enough light to sleep, and we used the money we saved on a great pasta dinner down the street. Sometimes the simplest fixes are the best ones, and it feels good to outsmart the system without spending extra cash.
