Used to coil every HDMI cable in a circle, now I do the loose loop thing and I'm not sold

For years I wrapped every HDMI cable tight around my hand, and after about 6 months my living room TV cable started flickering during movie night. Last month I switched to the loose over-under loop and it's survived 4 months so far, but my brother says tight coils are fine if you leave slack at the ends. Which camp are you in?
