Rant: the cable bin at the Dayton airport electronics kiosk actually saved my trip
I was killing 40 minutes at the Dayton airport last Thursday before a flight and wandered into that little electronics kiosk near gate B12, mostly because my phone was at 12 percent and I had no charger in my bag. The guy running it had a plastic bin under the counter full of random cables, all secondhand, marked 'tested, $6 each.' I dug around and pulled out a braided USB-C cord with a busted strain relief at the plug end, and he grabbed it back and said 'that one's coming apart, give me a sec.' He wrapped the joint with a strip of self-fusing silicone tape off a roll he kept in his pocket and handed it back to me, still $6. I used that cord for 3 days straight and the tape joint hasn't budged. It's the first time a cheap airport cable didn't die on me within a day, which is honestly a low bar but here we are. I feel a little dumb for being this happy over a 6 dollar cord, but the taped joint idea is something I want to try on the frayed ones at home. Has anyone actually had self-fusing tape hold up long term on a daily-use cord, or does it eventually go gummy?
