Level going dead in the middle of a four course run in Des Moines

My 6 foot aluminum level started reading a bubble off by a quarter inch on the second course, so I checked it against the string line and ended up tearing out 30 feet of wall on a Tuesday because someone in the shop before me must have dropped it, has anyone else had a brand new level go bad that fast?
