DAE notice guys buttering head joints on block that are already hollow?
Three jobs in a row now I've seen it. Young crew on the last one, they were smearing mortar in the head joints of 8 inch CMU and it just falls inside the cores. Does nothing. Said their foreman taught them that way. I've been laying 22 years and I still check my head joints with a mirror on the grout pours. How did you all learn to do head joints, and does anyone actually fail them on inspection anymore?
Saw the same thing on a job last month. Whole crew was slapping mud on the face of the block, then shoving them together. Half of it never touched the joint. Told the foreman and he shrugged like it was no big deal. Back in the day my old timer made us butter the ears and check every course. Mirror and light on every pour now too. Some of these inspectors just sign off without even looking.
