Unpopular opinion: my neighbor's stupid advice about banana peels in my rose bed was spot on
My neighbor Gladys, who has been growing roses in her front yard in Sacramento for like 30 years, told me last spring to bury banana peels about 4 inches deep around my rose bushes. I thought it was total nonsense, like some old wives tale she picked up at the garden club. I did it anyway on 3 of my 6 bushes just to prove her wrong, and I tossed the peels in the trash for the other 3. By July, the peel bushes had way more blooms, I counted 22 flowers on one compared to 9 on the ones I skipped. The leaves also looked darker and less spotty. I'm not saying it's some magic trick, but something about the potassium or whatever slowly breaking down down there helped. Now I'm saving peels in a bucket in my garage and my wife thinks I've lost it. Has anyone else tried this or is it just a coincidence with my soil? I want to hear if it works for other plants too.
