Thought being a night auditor at a 60-room motel in Tulsa was a dead-end, then I ran the numbers
I took the 11pm-7am shift at a 60-room motel near the Tulsa airport because nobody else on staff wanted it, and the owner paid me $14 instead of $11 for the shift. Boring as hell right? I sit at a desk for 8 hours, run a nightly report in a 15-year-old software, and fold laundry when housekeeping leaves early. But after 5 months I realized I get 3-4 hours of dead time every night and nobody cares what I do as long as the report prints and no one pounds on the front door. I finished an entire online bookkeeping certificate during those hours, all on the clock, and now I am moving to a $19/hr front desk manager spot at a bigger property downtown. I always thought overnight work was for people who had no other option, but I have never had this much free time on a paycheck in my life. Anyone else here work graveyard and use the down hours for something else, or am I the only one folding towels and doing homework at 3am?
