Spent 6 years doing my bookcloth grain direction all wrong

I was over at Colophon Bookbinders in St. Paul last month picking up some supplies and the guy behind the counter asked if I always cut my bookcloth the way I do. I said yeah and he just shook his head. Turns out I'd been cutting against the grain the entire time, no wonder my spines always had that weird crinkle after a few months. Anyone else have a "oh duh" moment like that with a basic step?

Man I feel this one deep. Six years is a long time to be doing it wrong but hey at least you caught it eventually right? I had a similar facepalm moment with my paste recipe, took me way too long to realize I was using the wrong starch.

Swapping to cornstarch fixed mine, now my paste holds together way better.
