Blew $80 on a bone folder that barely worked

Spent 50 bucks on a pack of Japanese bookbinding needles from Tokyo. They snap like crazy. The $5 pack from a local shop in Portland lasts way longer. Has anyone figured out which brands actually hold up?

Man my buddy Tom dropped like 60 bucks on this fancy set of Japanese awls from some specialty shop in San Francisco. First time he used one the handle literally spun around in his hand think the glue or whatever just gave out. He kept trying to salvage it but the tip chipped on the third book he worked on. Meanwhile his grandpa's old awl from a garage sale still works like a charm. It's wild how the expensive stuff can be total junk sometimes.

Did he try reaching out to the shop about the defect? Cause that sounds like a straight up manufacturing flaw, not just bad luck on an old tool. It's a shame when you spend that kind of money and end up with something worse than a garage sale find.
