Vent: half my club keeps calling every narrator an unreliable narrator and it kills the talk
We read The Remains of the Day for our meetup last Thursday at the library on Oak Street and before anyone got two sentences in, three people had already slapped the unreliable narrator label on Stevens. Here is the thing, that term means a specific thing, a narrator who lies or bends the truth to dodge the real story, and it does not just mean a guy who is wrong about his own feelings. Last month with a different book the same folks used it to shut down a disagreement in about 90 seconds and we never got back to the text. Can we agree to save that phrase for when we can point at an actual lie in the pages, or am I being too picky here?
