Book club debate about animal narrators took us 3 weeks to settle

We spent 3 full meetings fighting over whether an animal narrator counts as a character or a plot device. It started after reading a book told entirely from a dog's perspective, and half the group argued it was just a gimmick. The other half said it changed the emotional core completely. We finally agreed on a rubric that looks at how much agency the animal has in the story. Took way longer than expected, but now we use it for every fantasy book since. Anyone else use a scoring system for debate topics, or do you just vote on a winner at the end?
