Spent 6 hours fighting a Zip drive on a Windows 98 rig just to move 40MB of old band demos
Last Saturday I pulled my old Gateway 2000 out of the closet in Sacramento to grab some demos off a 100MB Zip disk from 1998, and Windows 98 would not read it no matter what I did. Side A: it is a driver mess, the Iomega guest software conflicts with the parallel port setting and you just gotta hunt down the right version. Side B: the click of death is real and the disk itself is shot, so no driver on earth will save it. I reinstalled the guest tools 4 times, swapped the parallel cable twice, and finally got it reading after disabling the port's ECP mode in BIOS. Took 6 hours for 40MB, so which side do you land on, driver hell or dead media?
