My sourdough starter survived a 3 day power outage, barely

I came home from a trip to Portland last month to find my starter had developed a thick gray liquid on top and smelled like nail polish remover, so I scooped off the top inch, fed it twice a day for 4 days straight, and it came back stronger than ever, has anyone else nursed a starter back from the brink like that or was I just lucky?

Used to be the type to chuck the whole thing at the first sign of trouble. I figured a funky smell meant it was dead, no point in saving it. But last winter mine got that same gray layer after a cold snap and I almost dumped it. Glad I didn't, because I tried the scoop and feed method out of pure stubbornness and it bounced back in under a week. Now I tell everyone, those things are way tougher than they look.
