My dad used to plan road trips with a paper atlas and a highlighter, now I just talk to my phone
I was cleaning out the cab of my truck last Tuesday and found my dad's old Rand McNally atlas from 1998 stuffed under the seat. He used to sit at the kitchen table with a yellow highlighter and mark every route before a trip, and he swore GPS would never catch on because 'a machine can't know when a road feels wrong.' I remember him saying that in 2003 when I showed him MapQuest on the family computer. These days I just say 'hey, directions to Amarillo' and my phone does the rest. The funny part is he was half right, that thing has sent me into a dead end more than once. But I still laugh when I think about him refusing to trust it while I can't even read a map anymore without getting lost. Anybody else keep an old atlas around just in case the signal drops?
