Just learned my local grocery store marks up organic milk 40% over regular

I was looking at the receipt from my Tuesday shop at Kroger in Portland and noticed organic whole milk was $6.79 while regular was $4.19. That's a 62 cent difference per gallon more than I expected after reading a USDA report on dairy pricing margins. Has anyone else checked their store's markup on basics like this and found something weird?

The USDA report probably averages out across different regions and store types, not just one Kroger in Portland. Our local chain here in Ohio has organic at $5.49 and regular at $3.99 near me, which is about a 37% markup. That 62 cent difference you found might be a Portland thing or maybe a specific brand markup at your store. Have you looked at what the store brand organic costs versus the name brand stuff?

Yeah, that's a good point about store brand vs name brand. A friend of mine in Austin, @the_rowan, told me she saves about 80 cents a carton by just grabbing the store brand organic eggs instead of the fancy ones.
