Took me 8 months to figure out why my eggs had thin shells
I kept getting brittle shells no matter what I fed my hens. Turns out I was giving them too much calcium in the form of oyster shells on top of layer feed, so they stopped eating enough of the regular food. I switched to offering the oyster shells in a separate dish and only refilling it when they actually pecked at it. Now after 3 weeks their eggs are solid again. Anyone else have a picky eater hen that refuses the shell mix?

Too much calcium" got me thinking. My rooster went through a phase where he would ONLY eat the cracked corn and leave the good stuff. I'd dump feed in the morning and he'd scratch through it like a maniac to find every last yellow kernel, leaving a big mess of pellets behind. The hens would eat his leftovers but he was skinny as a rail for a month. Then I realized he was just bored, so I started tossing scratch out in the grass and he went back to eating the regular feed like normal. Birds are WEIRD, man. Glad your shells sorted out though, that's a satisfying fix.
