My egg count went from 2 a week to 5 after I fixed one dumb thing in the coop
Six months ago my three hens were giving me maybe 2 eggs a week total and I was ready to give up on them. In June I finally figured out it was the light, my coop sits under a big oak tree in my yard in Lexington so it was dark by 4pm in winter and I never thought twice about it. I ran an extension cord out there and put a plain shop light on a timer from 6am to 8pm, cost me about $20 total. Within 3 weeks I was getting 4 to 5 eggs a week and now in October it's still holding steady. I also added a second waterer because I caught them fighting over the one dish and I think that helped too honestly. People keep saying light doesn't matter that much, but my feed bill is the same and my carton is full, so tell me that's a coincidence. Anyone else mess with coop lighting in winter or do you all just let them rest?
