Quote for shipping my truck from Phoenix to Portland jumped from $900 to $1,850 because of one number: 114
I got three quotes two weeks ago for shipping my F-150 from Phoenix to Portland and they all sat around $850 to $950. I picked the middle one at $900 and felt fine about it. Then the guy calls me back and says the new quote is $1,850, basically double. I asked why and he goes, your truck is 114 inches long from bumper to bumper. Apparently anything past 108 inches pushes you into a different trailer setup and sometimes an oversize permit, and those slots get priced different. I had no clue length was even part of the math, I figured weight and distance were the whole deal. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I just eat the extra $950 or try to find a broker who runs a bigger trailer on that route. Has anyone moved a full size crew cab on this lane and got a number closer to the original quote? I don't want to get played twice.

Yeah that 114 number is real and it's the same thing that bit me moving a Silverado from Tucson to Seattle last year. What worked for me was calling around to smaller independent drivers instead of the big broker sites, because a lot of them run trailers that can fit up to 120 inches without needing a permit. The trick is you have to ask them straight up what their max length is before you even talk price, otherwise you get the same surprise call back. I ended up at $980 when the first three quotes had jumped to over $1,700 on me. It took me like six phone calls and a couple days of waiting for someone heading up the I-5 anyway, but saving $700 was worth the hassle. Also measure it yourself because some of these guys round up and 114 is already past their cutoff, so make sure they know the real number up front.
