Skeptical about the $8 magnetic drain plug my parts guy pushed on me, until I cut open the old filter
Guy at the counter in Dayton kept telling me these things catch metal shavings better than a regular plug, and I figured it was just another upsell. Ran one for 5,000 miles on a high mileage 4.3 and when I cracked the filter open there was this fine gray paste stuck to the magnet that would've been floating around the pan. Showed it to two other techs in the shop and they both ordered a handful for their own cars. Any of you run these long term, or is it just kind of a gimmick once the engine's healthy?
