Question about the old guy who brought his 1965 C10 in for a brake job and taught me something
Had a guy bring his 1965 C10 into the shop on a Tuesday about 3 weeks ago for a brake job. Instead of waiting in the lobby, he pulled up a stool and watched me the whole time, then said "son, put a little brake grease on the back of the pads, not the face" when he saw me reaching for the tube. I'd been doing it dry for 8 years and never had a comeback, but he said his dad ran a shop in Waco for 30 years and that was rule one. Did the grease on the next 4 jobs and the pedal feel was smoother every time, so now I'm wondering what else I picked up wrong early on. What's a small habit you learned from a customer that stuck with you?
put a little brake grease on the back of the pads" reminds me of an old timer who told me to hit the backing plate with a wire brush first. Never skipped that step since and my squeal comebacks dropped to basically zero.
