Guy at the counter in Tulsa swore his truck was factory black, I had to show him the door jamb
So a fella walked in around 4pm on a Friday with a 2016 pickup he said had never been touched, wanted me to blend just the front fender after a parking lot scrape. I grabbed my light and the paint code off the glovebox tag, and the code said a blue black, but his fender was reading way darker. He kept saying it was factory, no question, and told me his brother in law bought it brand new off the lot in Tulsa back in 2016. I finally popped the driver door and pointed at the jamb, which was the real color, and the fender was a shade down, like someone already resprayed it a while back. He went quiet for a second and then said his brother in law must have bumped a guardrail and never mentioned it. We blended it out to match the jamb and it came out clean, but he still swears the truck is all original. Funny thing is, I use that door jamb trick on almost every job off the lot. What is your go to spot to read real color on a car you do not trust?
