My cousin talked me out of a minivan and she was right

I was dead set on getting a used minivan for hauling my kids and gear, but my cousin who drives for a living told me to try a crossover instead. She pointed out that sliding doors are nice but the gas bill would eat me alive on my 40-mile commute to Tacoma every day. Took a Mazda CX-5 for a test drive last Tuesday and honestly the cargo space works fine with a roof box. Now I'm just wondering if anyone else found that a smaller vehicle actually fits their family life better than they expected?
