Dismissed a dig report for years, now I get it after seeing the site
Three years ago I read about a pottery shard pattern in Turkey and figured it was overhyped. Last month I actually visited the excavation near Ephesus and handled the pieces myself. The layering matches the written account exactly, down to the clay color differences. Turns out the lead archaeologist knew way more than the summary suggested. Anyone else change their mind after seeing a site in person?

Walked into a cave art site in Spain with the same doubt. The photos online made the reds look dull, but in person the contrast was insane and I could see how they used the rock bumps to make the animals look alive. Read the field notes after and realized they documented every single flaw in the rock, which totally changed how I read their methodology. That trip made me stop trusting summaries and start looking for the raw data instead.
