My dad's advice about capacitor discharge finally paid off after 15 years

Back when I was a teenager, my dad kept telling me to always discharge old CRT monitors before touching anything inside. I thought he was just being overly cautious. Last month I picked up a 1992 Macintosh Classic from a garage sale in Portland. I opened it up without thinking and got a zap that knocked me backwards off my chair. Nothing was damaged but my arm was sore for two days. Now I finally understand why he was so insistent about that step. Has anyone else learned a hard lesson ignoring safety advice from a family member?

My dad was the same way about letting soldering irons cool down before touching the tip. I was like "yeah yeah whatever" until I grabbed one that was still hot and got a blister that took a week to heal. Old school safety advice hits different after you've been humbled by your own stupidity lol.

Three blisters in two days taught me that lesson. @taylorcarr, I actually still think letting a soldering iron cool naturally is a waste of time if you have a stand. I just flick the tip against a wet sponge to speed it up. Got a nasty burn on my forearm when the wet sponge hit the wrong angle and the iron kicked back at me. Now I use a brass tip cleaner instead, way safer.
