Ran into a guy at a con who had a 3 hour debate over one anime ending

Last summer at Anime Expo in LA, this dude named Mike cornered me by the ramen stand and argued that the ending of Evangelion was actually a comedy. He pulled out a crumpled notebook with timeline diagrams and said 'Shinji's final scene is just a punchline.' I kinda want to rewatch it now - has anyone else had a random encounter like that change how they see a show?
