PSA: a guy in a Crunchyroll comment section told me my reviews were 'spoiler soup' and it stung because he was right
About 4 months ago I wrote up my thoughts on the second season of a show I had been watching since episode 1, and I dumped the whole plot into the post like a recap. Plot point after plot point, in order, front to back. A commenter named kazuma_83 (or something close to that) replied with one line that stuck with me. He said, and I'm quoting here, 'why would I watch it if you already watched it for me.' I sat with that for a couple days because my first reaction was to get annoyed, but he was not wrong. I had been writing every review the same way for almost 2 years, just retelling the story instead of saying what I actually thought about it. So I changed my format. Now I keep plot talk to maybe 3 sentences max, and the rest is about how the pacing felt, what the animation did in specific scenes, and who I think should watch it. I also started putting a plain 'no spoilers past episode 4' note at the top after a different person said they got burned on a scene I thought was common knowledge by then. Has anyone else gotten a comment that made them redo how they write about shows, or am I the only one who needed some random stranger to point it out?
