Hot take: I slept on sports anime for way too long
The character growth in series like Haikyuu is actually amazing.

Yeah the "same arc on repeat" thing is actually what makes the growth hit harder. Like when Hinata has to learn to receive, it's not just a new skill, it's him facing his own limits after thinking he could just jump higher. Each time they doubt themselves, it's a bigger challenge that needs a more grown up answer. The pattern works because we see how much deeper the solution has to go each season, lol.

Haikyuu is good fun, but after three seasons it's basically the same arc on repeat. A new rival shows up, the team doubts themselves, they have a big game and learn to trust each other more. It's well done comfort food, not exactly deep character studies.

But don't you see how the characters actually change? Sure, each season has a new rival, but look at how Hinata grows from a rookie to someone who understands teamwork. Kageyama learns to trust his teammates instead of just relying on his own skill. Their bonds get deeper with every match, and that's where the real story is. Calling it comfort food misses the slow build of their development over time. The show is about more than just winning games; it's about these kids becoming better players and people.
