Shoutout to the $6 USB floppy drive that rescued 20 years of my dad's tax files
My dad handed me a shoebox last weekend with about 40 floppy disks from his old office in Dayton and asked if I could get the files off them. I figured I was stuck, since no machine in my house has seen a floppy since 2006, but a $6 USB drive off a marketplace site showed up in two days. It made this horrible grinding noise on disk 12 and I was sure it had eaten the thing, but it coughed up a spreadsheet from 1998 like nothing happened. Three disks were totally dead and one had a label that just said "DO NOT ERASE," which of course held nothing. Total damage was 6 bucks and an afternoon, and my dad now thinks I'm some kind of wizard. What's the oldest drive you've plugged in just to pull data off something?
