Dropped $45 on a capacitor kit for my 2009 iMac and it actually brought the thing back from the dead
My 2009 iMac started making this awful buzzing sound 2 months ago and would shut off after 10 minutes. I almost tossed it at the e-waste drop in Sacramento but figured what the heck, so I ordered a recap kit from Console5 for $45. Took me 4 hours with a soldering iron and I only burned one pad, but now it runs like nothing ever happened. Has anyone else recapped an old Mac and had it hold up long term, or am I just buying myself 6 more months?
Did you check the other caps before you started swapping or just replace the whole kit? I'm curious if the buzzing came from one bad cap or if the heat from the old ones cooked a bunch of them. Been thinking about doing this to a 2011 model but I don't want to waste a weekend if it's usually just one or two that fail.
