Can we talk about the 1.44MB limit that kept my college papers safe for 20 years?
I was cleaning out a closet in my apartment in Cleveland last week and found a shoebox with about 40 floppy disks from 1998 to 2003. I plugged in an old USB drive reader I got for $18 on eBay and every single disk still mounted fine, which honestly shocked me. Here is the part that got me: 1.44MB felt huge at the time, and now it is smaller than one photo from my phone. My senior thesis draft fit on three disks with room to spare, and I remember being scared of running out of space. What surprised me more was that the old drive was way quieter than I expected after sitting in a box for two decades. Has anyone here had luck with a disk that would not read right away, and did a head cleaner actually help or just make things worse?
