Warning: a guy at a garage sale in Boise handed me his old Pentax and it totally changed how I shoot
So two weekends ago I'm driving through Boise visiting my sister and I stop at this random garage sale off State Street, mostly looking for old tools. This older guy sees my camera bag and asks if I shoot film, and when I say yeah he pulls out this beat up Pentax K1000 from a cardboard box and just hands it to me to try. He tells me the meter is dead but the shutter is fine, and he wants 20 bucks for it. I almost passed because I lean on my meter for everything, but he said something that stuck with me, he goes "just guess and check your notes later, that's how we all learned." So I bought it and ran a roll of cheap Fuji 400 through it around downtown that afternoon, guessing every exposure by feel. Half the shots were trash but like 3 of them came out better than anything I get with my fancy auto stuff, and now I'm shooting that K1000 more than my main body. It's weird how losing the meter made me pay more attention to light instead of just trusting a needle. Anybody else here shoot meterless on purpose, and do you have a trick for guessing in bright sun?
