A guy at a job site in Portland told me AI would replace my crew, and I have been chewing on it for two weeks
I was doing a big backyard cleanup in Portland two weeks ago and the homeowner, a software guy, told me AI would be running crews like mine within 5 years. I laughed it off at first, but then I watched a demo of a little robot that maps a yard and edges a lawn on its own, and it was better than I expected. So here is the debate I want to throw out: is AI coming for jobs like landscaping, framing, and roofing, or is it just going to be a tool guys use like a better string trimmer? One side says a robot still cannot read a soggy slope, spot poison oak, or talk a nervous homeowner through a replant plan, not for years anyway. The other side says that sounds exactly like what people said about assembly lines and trucking, and look where that went. What is your honest call, is the human part of this work safe for a while or am I just fooling myself?
