Saw an AI piece at a Portland coffee shop priced at $150, and I stood there for 20 minutes trying to hate it
I walked into this small cafe on Alberta St last month and there was a framed print on the wall with a little tag that said $150. The barista told me a local guy made it with Midjourney and did the printing himself. My first reaction was to roll my eyes because I've been pretty loud about AI stuff not counting as real art. But I kept walking back to it. It was a foggy bridge scene with this weird warm light that didn't make any sense, and I couldn't stop staring at it. I've seen maybe 40 AI images online at this point and most of them have that same glossy fake look, but this one hit different. I asked the barista if anyone had bought one and she said he'd sold 6 in two weeks. Now I'm sitting here wondering if my problem was never the tool, just that most people using it aren't doing anything interesting with it. So what was the image that made you change your mind, or are you still firmly in the nope camp?
Went through the exact same thing at a gallery popup last spring, this weird glitchy forest print kept pulling me back and I felt stupid for liking it. Turned out the guy had run like 200 generations and painted over half of it by hand, which made way more sense to me. Sounds like the tool was never the problem, just the amount of care people put in.
