That co-op electrician who warned me about knob and tube, 1992

Back in '92, I was rewiring a bungalow near Dayton and figured a few old lines were fine to leave. An old co-op electrician, maybe 70, stopped by to check my work and pointed at a cloth-wrapped splice in the attic. He said, 'That stuff heats up like a stove coil, and you'll be lucky to walk away if it shorts.' He showed me how the insulation was crumbling right where it bent over a joist, and sure enough, touching it made the flakes fall off. I spent an extra 6 hours pulling every foot of it out, and I've never trusted a 'it's been fine for decades' line since. Has anyone else run into hidden old wiring that looked okay but was a real fire waiting to happen?
